How to change your address on IRS

To change your address on IRS: sign in, open the address settings page linked below, replace your old mailing (and billing) address, and save. It takes about five minutes once you’re signed in.

The short version

Go straight to the address settings: https://www.irs.gov/faqs/irs-procedures/address-changes

  1. The fastest options are filing Form 8822, or simply using your new address on your next tax return.
  2. If you have an IRS online account, update your address there under Profile.
  3. Allow 4–6 weeks for the change to process across IRS systems.

One IRS gotcha: The IRS does not forward paper refund or credit checks. If one is owed to you, update before it’s mailed or it can be returned.

Worth knowing for government accounts

  • Government records are the highest-stakes updates: your driver’s license, vehicle registration, tax refunds, and benefits all route to the address on file.
  • Most agencies require the update within 10–30 days of moving — sooner is safer.
